Demorest voters decide redevelopment and borrowing

The law requires a November 4, 2025 referendum on redevelopment powers for Demorest, Georgia. Approval requires more than half of votes cast on the question; the powers take effect immediately upon approval. These powers let the city redevelop areas, create tax allocation districts, issue tax allocation bonds, and take on related obligations. The authority follows Georgia’s redevelopment law and Constitution, including future changes to the redevelopment law. Rejection, or failure to hold the required election, blocks these powers and automatically repeals the act on January 1, 2026. Election notice must appear at least 90 days ahead, plus weekly in Habersham County’s official newspaper for two consecutive weeks immediately before voting. The city pays election costs, and its election superintendent must certify the result to the Secretary of State. The law sets no direct household payment, tax change, or benefit amount.
