Lower school taxes for Lowndes seniors

Beginning January 1, 2027, seniors in the Lowndes County school district get larger homestead breaks on school taxes. Age 65+ get $40,000 off the assessed value; age 70+ get $50,000 off. You must apply with the Lowndes County tax commissioner. If you are 65+ and already had the $10,000 school homestead, you get the $40,000 automatically. The break renews each year while you live in the home, and you must tell the tax office if you stop qualifying. This only lowers the Lowndes County school district part of your bill, and it replaces (you cannot stack) other school-district homestead exemptions.

2026 vote required to start

The law requires a local vote at the 2026 general primary. If more than half vote Yes, the exemptions start January 1, 2027. If voters do not approve or the election is not held as required, the exemptions do not take effect and the Act is repealed 365 days after the election.
