Barrow County gets a full-time prosecutor

The law creates a full-time solicitor-general, a prosecutor for Barrow County's State Court, who must meet state-law qualifications. The Governor appoints the first prosecutor for a term from January 1, 2021, to January 1, 2023. Qualified county voters elect later prosecutors every four years, starting with the November 2022 statewide general election. Elected terms last four years and begin January 1 after the election. Each prosecutor stays in office until a successor is elected and qualified.

Barrow County funds prosecutor pay and staff

Barrow County pays the solicitor-general 95% of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit district attorney's annual salary, excluding local supplements, capped at $142,500. The county provides legally required benefits and pays the salary on the same schedule as other county employees. County commissioners must authorize added staff or contractors, including assistant prosecutors, other attorneys, investigators, office workers, and victim and witness helpers. The solicitor-general sets their county-paid compensation, subject to commissioners' approval. Investigators must meet Georgia's qualifications for peace officer certification.
