Starting July 1, 2025, the First Circuit Probate and Family Courts have a two-year pilot to pay for certain guardianship and conservatorship resources. The court can fund a kokua kanawai investigation and report, a guardian ad litem, or a professional evaluation, including psychological, neurocognitive, or functional evaluations. A respondent must lack enough money to pay, and the court must find the resource beneficial. The Judiciary can spend $50,000 per court in each of fiscal years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027. It must report on the pilot, people served, and future funding recommendations before the 2026 and 2027 regular sessions.
