Hawaii inmates get help obtaining identification

Effective upon approval, the law requires Hawaii’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to tell inmates about available identification help. On request, the department must help inmates get civil identification cards, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and other needed documents. These include documents needed for jobs, Medicaid, and housing. Help must come as soon as practical, at least one year before parole or release. For work furlough, extended furlough, or community placement, the department must provide application forms as soon as practical, at least 90 days before release. Missing either deadline does not end the duty to provide help or forms. The department must coordinate with transportation officials, county driver examiners, and other relevant government agencies.
