Heavier milk loads with new safety rules

Beginning January 1, 2027, Iowa allows annual permits for trucks that haul fluid milk. With the permit, a vehicle can exceed the usual state weight limit up to a gross weight of ninety-six one hundred thirty-six thousand pounds. Operation is limited to primary roads and primary road extensions in cities, and only when hauling to or from a milk plant, receiving station, or transfer station. The department also sets minimum axle spacing for these permitted vehicles, which can add equipment or compliance costs. This permit is allowed even though annual overweight permits are otherwise restricted.
