Report half-staff violations to Attorney General

Beginning 07/01/2026, any person can report a claimed half-staff violation to the Iowa Attorney General. The Attorney General may file a case in the name of the state. The Attorney General can ask a court to order officials to follow the governor’s half-staff directive.

Flag display rules for public buildings

Beginning 07/01/2026, a public building means a state or local government building used for a public purpose. Boards that supply these buildings must provide a suitable Iowa state flag. The building custodian must raise the U.S. and Iowa flags on each secular day when weather allows. They must fly both flags at half-staff when the governor orders it.
