Drivers: default speed now 60

Beginning July 1, 2026, the default speed limit in Iowa is 60 mph. If a road has no posted limit, you may drive up to 60 mph unless another law sets a different limit. Posted signs still control where they exist. Usual speeding penalties still apply if you go over the limit.

Temporary overlays for speed signs

Beginning July 1, 2026, highway agencies can place approved, nonpermanent overlays or stickers on speed limit signs to show the new limit. This is only for updates caused by this law and only until each sign is replaced on its normal schedule. The Iowa DOT must approve the overlays. The law does not provide money for new signs.
