Beginning July 1, 2026, physicians age 60+ who mainly supervise and train residents can get an emeritus license. Apply on the Iowa Board of Medicine form. You keep the same scope of practice you had before. The license lasts three years and you can renew it once. You do not need continuing education to keep or renew it. Application and renewal fees are half of the regular license fees. The board writes rules for this license, including what counts as being primarily engaged in supervising and training residents.
The board cannot issue an emeritus license before January 1, 2026. The law takes effect on July 1, 2026.
