New lower-cost license for older doctors
Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa offers an emeritus license for medical and osteopathic doctors age 60 or older. Applicants must mainly supervise and train resident doctors, or plan to do so. They must use the board’s application form, and the board must adopt rules defining what work qualifies. The license keeps the doctor’s existing scope of practice, lasts three years from issue, and can be renewed once. Application and renewal fees are half the matching standard license fees; the law does not state dollar amounts. No continuing education credits are needed to keep or renew this license. The law also bars the board from issuing these licenses before January 1, 2026.
