Only Iowa lawmakers can change lawsuit deadlines

Starting July 1, 2026, only the Iowa General Assembly can change the time limits for filing civil cases under section 614.1. Courts, state agencies, and local bodies cannot change those deadlines by rule or order. This covers cases like personal injury, product liability, malpractice, wage disputes, and contract or property claims listed in section 614.1. Deadlines are more predictable statewide, but it is harder to get extra time in special cases. Existing deadlines stay the same unless changed by a new law.
