Beginning July 1, 2026, you face tighter trapping rules. Colony traps are banned, unless allowed for muskrats by rule. Box traps that can catch more than one animal per set are not allowed. You must tag traps and snares with your department ID or your name and address, and check them every 24 hours if not fully underwater. A hunting license is required to box trap cottontail rabbits and squirrels. Officers may seize traps and snares found in use if they violate these rules.
Beginning July 1, 2026, any tree stand you place for deer hunting on public land must show a metal plate with your department-issued ID number. You can be ticketed if the stand lacks this ID. The law also shields you from liability if someone else uses your stand and gets hurt or damages property.
Beginning July 1, 2026, a property owner, the owner’s agent, or a drainage district may destroy a beaver den or breach or alter a beaver dam to protect the owner’s property.
Beginning July 1, 2026, a fur dealer’s annual license fee cannot be more than $50. This cap applies to residents and nonresidents.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the scheduled fine is $30 per violation for a list of wildlife and trapping rules. This includes the tree stand ID rule and several hunting and licensing sections. You pay $30 each time you are cited under these listed sections.
