Military-only seats on county veterans boards

Beginning July 1, 2026, each county veterans board has three or five members, set by the board of supervisors. To serve, you must be a veteran under Iowa Code 35.1; or an Iowa resident now in the Iowa National Guard or an Iowa reserve unit with a letter from your commander; or an Iowa resident who formerly served in the Iowa Guard or an Iowa reserve unit and was honorably discharged, shown by a DD214 or a commander’s letter. If possible, members come from different military branches.

Veteran status required for county veterans director

Beginning July 1, 2026, the county veterans executive director must meet the same rules as commissioners: be a veteran under section 35.1, a current Iowa Guard/reserve member with a commander’s letter, or a former Iowa Guard/reserve member with an honorable discharge shown by a DD214 or commander’s letter. Anyone employed as executive director before July 1, 1989 is exempt. The state Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes the executive director as a county veterans service officer to help veterans and dependents get benefits. The commission hires the director, subject to the board of supervisors’ yearly approval. The director may hire staff, no commissioner may be employed by the office, and the board sets pay after a commission recommendation.
