Legal shield for unpaid emergency helpers

Beginning July 1, 2026, you are protected from civil lawsuits when you give unpaid, good-faith emergency help. This covers first aid, emergency medical care, and emergency psychological help, including responding to suicidal thoughts. You must be at the scene or stop at the scene of an accident or emergency. The protection does not apply if you are grossly negligent. It ends when the person reaches a hospital, when a provider or facility takes over, or when an ambulance attendant takes custody.
