Drivers must protect walkers and cyclists

Beginning July 1, 2026, drivers must use due care to avoid hitting pedestrians and people on bikes or e-bikes. Drivers give an audible signal when needed. Drivers use extra caution around children and anyone obviously confused, incapacitated, or intoxicated.

Bicyclists get same traffic rights and duties

Beginning July 1, 2026, bicyclists and e-bike riders have the same traffic rights as drivers. They also have the same duties, except for rules that do not fit human-powered vehicles. Riders must use due care.

New bike riding and passenger rules

Beginning July 1, 2026, you must sit on a permanent, attached seat when riding. Do not carry more people than the bike or e-bike is built to carry. An adult may carry a child in a secure backpack, sling, or attached child carrier.
