Stock epinephrine and emergency use in schools

Beginning July 1, 2026, schools can keep a stock of epinephrine auto-injectors under a school prescription. A nurse or trained staff may give epinephrine to a student using the student's prescription on file, or to anyone on school grounds in good faith during anaphylaxis, even without a prescription. School leaders must set training standards for designated staff on symptoms, storage, use, disposal, and emergency follow-up. Schools may make deals with manufacturers or suppliers to get injectors at fair, reduced, or no cost. Doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, schools, and staff have lawsuit protections when they act reasonably; this does not cover gross negligence or willful harm.

Students can carry inhalers and epinephrine

Beginning July 1, 2026, school boards must let students with a doctor's prescription or written direction self-administer inhalers and epinephrine. Students who are allowed to self-manage can carry and use their inhaler, epinephrine injector, insulin, or blood glucose supplies at all times at school. A district can require a current backup set to be kept with the school nurse or administrator.
