Sheriffs can stop and board boats

Beginning July 1, 2026, county sheriffs and their deputies are the primary enforcers of Idaho’s boating law. They can stop and board any boat covered by the law when they have reasonable suspicion of a violation. This clarifies who polices Idaho waters and aims to improve safety. The law includes an emergency clause for this start date.
