Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

60-day notice for homeowner fire policies

The law requires at least 60 days’ written notice before canceling a standard fire policy, and it must state the reason. If the cancellation is for nonpayment, the insurer must give at least 10 days’ notice; if mailed, the 10 days start five days after the postmark. For nonrenewal, the insurer must give at least 60 days’ written notice. If the notice is mailed less than 60 days before the policy ends, coverage remains in effect until 60 days after the notice.

60-day notice before ending business coverage

The law gives businesses more time before certain commercial policies end. After a policy is in force 60 days or at renewal, cancellations for reasons other than nonpayment need at least 60 days’ written notice. Cancellations for nonpayment need at least 10 days’ notice; if mailed, the 10 days start five days after the postmark. For nonrenewals, the insurer must send written notice at least 60 days before expiration to the first‑named insured. If that notice is mailed late, coverage stays in place until 60 days after the notice, and premium for the extra time is pro rata.

Rules apply only to new policies

The new 60‑day notice rules apply only to policies that start after this law takes effect. Policies that began earlier keep the old notice timing. The law does not change past or current obligations on policies already in force.
