10-year plates, stickers, and number recycling

Beginning July 1, 2026, license plates stay valid for 10 years from the issue date. In year nine, you get a notice if the plate is still readable and mounted correctly. Most plates must use a red, white, or blue sticker that shows the year and a 1–12 month number, placed in the lower right corner; certain trailers and semitrailers are excepted. If you do not renew within 60 days after expiration, your plate number can be reassigned. You may contact the county to ask for a specific recycled number.

Replace damaged plates and transfer registration

Beginning July 1, 2026, if your plates are lost, stolen, damaged, or unreadable, you must apply for a duplicate. If your vehicle is completely destroyed and you show proof, you can move the remaining registration to a replacement vehicle. You pay a $5 service transfer fee, which the registering office keeps. Original registration fees are not refunded.

Which plates you get and how they look

Beginning July 1, 2026, motorcycles, trailers, truck‑tractors, and semitrailers get one plate. ATVs, utility‑type vehicles, and motorbikes get one restricted plate. Most other motor vehicles get two plates. If you get one plate, you must mount it as display rules require. Plates keep the centennial look with “Famous Potatoes” and “Scenic Idaho.” Plates must be readable from 75 feet and use reflective material. Utility and rental utility trailer plates keep the design used when they were made; unexpired plates are not reissued for a new design.

New rules for government and commercial plates

Beginning July 1, 2026, government fleet plates stay on the same vehicle for 10 years and do not need renewal stickers. Plates for state or taxing‑district vehicles must show an agency designator; personalized or specialty versions are exempt from that mark. The board can require you to return plates and stickers when your lawful use ends. Owners with registrations under sections 49‑434 or 49‑435 get a printed or electronic registration card. State agencies and taxing districts must reimburse the department for the cost of plates. The department and board can set rules to run the plate program.
