Tighter rules for special license plates

New or redesigned special plates use the red‑white‑blue background, show “Idaho,” and may omit “Scenic Idaho.” They cannot use slogans that infringe state trademarks. These design rules do not apply to plates issued under the special plates law or to the new agriculture plates. Special plates are not issued to vehicles over 26,000 pounds or to vehicles registered under Idaho Code 49‑434(5) or 49‑435. The department does not start new special plate programs for private groups after July 1, 2020, and must end a nonprofit program that sells too few plates: under 1,000 in year 1, under 1,500 in year 2, or under 2,000 in year 3 or later. If a program ends, you may keep renewing your plate until it must be replaced, but no duplicate or replacement plates are made.

Idaho agriculture plates: eligibility and fees

Owners of vehicles registered under Idaho Code 49-402 or 49-434(1) can get Idaho agriculture plates. Vehicles over 26,000 pounds cannot. You pay $35 for the first plate and $25 each year after, plus your normal registration. Of the first $35, $10 goes to the state highway account and $25 to Idaho Ag in the Classroom; of each $25 renewal, $10 goes to the highway account and $15 to that program. You may move the plates to another vehicle after you pay transfer fees and get new registration. The farm image must be accepted by Food Producers of Idaho and the Idaho Ag in the Classroom board, and the department approves the design and numbering; startup design costs come from the program’s account. You can also buy a $30 sample plate; $10 goes to the highway account and $20 to the program.

When these changes take effect

This law takes effect July 1, 2026. The act is declared an emergency and is in force on that date.
