Beginning July 1, 2026, vehicles with a registered max gross weight of 26,000 pounds or less can get Appaloosa plates. Vehicles over 26,000 pounds are not eligible. Availability still follows the department’s rules. If you sell or transfer a vehicle, you may move your Appaloosa plates to another vehicle after you pay the transfer fees. You can display them only after you receive the new registration. The plate design must be acceptable to the Appaloosa foundation and approved by the department. The Appaloosa horse club pays the program’s initial costs, including plate design.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Appaloosa plates cost $35 to start and $25 each year to renew. These charges are on top of your regular registration fees. From the $35, $10 goes to the state highway account and $25 supports the Appaloosa foundation for youth horse education in Idaho. From each $25 renewal, $10 goes to the state highway account and $15 goes to the foundation. You can also buy a sample plate for $30; $10 goes to the state highway account and $20 to the foundation. There is no extra fee to personalize a sample plate.
