Sheriffs reimbursed for out-of-state recapture

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho county sheriff’s offices can bill for costs to travel to another state to pick up a prisoner, probationer, or parolee who absconded from Idaho Department of Correction supervision. Sheriffs can send the invoice after they return the person and place them in the county jail. Bills can list mileage or travel, staff time, overtime to cover shifts, and other reasonable costs. The agency named in court records as supervising the person pays the bill. The Department of Correction sets aside money each year and ensures payment within 30 days of receiving the invoice.
