Medicaid prior authorization break for teaching clinicians

Starting July 1, 2026, physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in family medicine, psychiatry, or obstetrics and gynecology can earn a 12-month break from Idaho Medicaid prior authorization for medically necessary care. To qualify, complete at least 360 precepting hours in a calendar year, with at least 60% in a qualified rural or underserved area. You track your hours and report them to the Department of Health and Welfare; once verified, the exemption starts the next calendar year. No more than 100 practitioners per specialty get the exemption each year. The department can remove an exemption after one claims review per year if a random sample scores below its risk standard, with at least 25 days notice. The department must set rules and a risk-weighted scoring method that count both the number and dollar amount of claims, subject to legislative approval.
