Candidates pay $30 filing fee

Beginning January 1, 2027, anyone filing a declaration of candidacy for Idaho state representative or senator must pay a $30 filing fee to the Secretary of State. The fee is paid when you file and goes to the state’s general fund.

New age and residency rules for candidates

Beginning January 1, 2027, candidates for Idaho state representative or senator must meet new rules. You must be at least 21 on the general election date and be a U.S. citizen. You must have been registered to vote in the district for the full year before that election. You must keep a fixed home in the district and have lived there at least 120 nights in the year before you file. If you were on active military duty or a religious mission in that year, you are exempt from the 120-night rule.
