Safety rules, flag, and night limits for skiers

You may not tow a skier from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise. This night ban does not apply on a permitted slalom course with the required mirror or during authorized tournaments. When towing, you must operate carefully, keep a safe distance from people and property, and avoid excessive wake. Do not manipulate a towrope to make a rider hit a person or object, except for a jumping ramp or while skiing a slalom course. Boats that tow must carry a red or orange warning flag at least one square foot; when a rider is down, a crew member must hold it up, visible from all sides, until the rider is out of the water. Show the flag only then or when other serious danger exists.

Tow skiers solo with mirror, limited hours

When towing a person on skis, you must have at least one other competent observer on board. You may tow solo only if your boat has a firmly mounted mirror at least 4 inches by 4 inches that lets you face forward and watch the rider at all times. Then either operate inside a permitted slalom course with a rearview wide‑angle mirror (at least 4x4) that gives a full view behind the boat, or operate during these times: May 15–September 10, from one hour before sunrise until 9:00 a.m.; September 11–May 14, any time of day. Water‑ski schools and duly authorized tournaments, competitions, expositions, or trials are also exempt from the observer rule.
