Governor appoints State Historic Preservation Officer

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Governor appoints a qualified State Historic Preservation Officer and sets the pay. The officer serves at the Governor’s pleasure and can hire staff to run the program in line with the National Historic Preservation Act. The program sits in the Office of Species, Minerals, and Energy Coordination, which runs and enforces preservation rules, but not beyond federal standards. The officer must appoint a qualified review board under the National Historic Preservation Act. The law repeals the prior SHPO appointment section.

Historic society role and sites clarified

Beginning July 1, 2026, the law defines the Idaho State Historical Society to include the State Museum, the State Archives and Records Center, and the State Historic Preservation Office. The society holds these in public trust and operates named state historic sites, such as the Old Idaho Penitentiary, John and Ann Doney House, Lorenzo Hill Hatch House, Franklin Relic Hall, Franklin Cooperative Mercantile Institution, Rock Creek Station and Stricker Homesite, and the Pierce Courthouse.
