Parents can refuse newborn screening tests

Beginning July 1, 2026, you can claim an exemption from required newborn and infant tests. You can object if the tests conflict with your faith or your philosophical or conscientious beliefs. This includes teachings of a recognized church or denomination you belong to. You can also claim a medical exemption if an Idaho‑licensed physician signs a certificate stating the tests would endanger your child's life or health. If you claim an exemption, your baby does not have to get the tests.
