College credit for firefighter training

By June 1, 2027, Illinois colleges that offer at least one course with credit hours recommended by a national association for firefighter training must have a policy to award credit for firefighting training and experience. The policy applies to enrolled students who completed recommended or documented firefighter training or experience. Schools must accept and verify your training records, keep a list of trainings they have credited, and give the policy to applicants who report firefighting service. Policies are filed with the Illinois Board of Higher Education (and the Illinois Community College Board for community colleges) by March 31, 2027 and every March 31 for the next fall, and added to each school’s credit‑for‑prior‑learning rules. Firefighter includes career and volunteer, and covered schools include the named Illinois public universities, public community colleges, and any school that receives funds under Section 35 of the Higher Education Student Assistance Act.
