Paid blood and organ leave for workers

Beginning January 1, 2024, covered employees get paid time to donate blood or an organ. You can take up to 10 paid days in any 12 months to be an organ donor. Part-time workers are paid their daily average from the past 2 months for each leave day. You can also take up to 1 hour of paid leave to give blood every 56 days, or more if your employer or union contract allows. Blood donations must follow national medical standards.

Employer approval and proof for donation leave

Beginning January 1, 2024, you must get employer approval before using blood or organ donation leave. The state Department sets the steps to request and approve leave. You must provide medical documents about the planned donation before approval. Employers must follow these rules.
