Beginning July 27, 2015, life insurers in Illinois must treat people in the same risk class the same. They cannot charge you more or cut benefits just because you have a disability, including blindness. Different rates are allowed only when backed by sound actuarial data tied to the disability. Insurers may exclude disabilities that are solely blindness if the condition existed when the policy was issued.
Beginning July 27, 2015, insurers selling final expense life policies cannot deny, cancel, limit, or charge you more only because you have a felony conviction. A final expense policy is sold only to cover funeral and burial costs. Insurers do not have to issue coverage to people who are actively incarcerated for a felony.
Beginning July 27, 2015, life insurers in Illinois cannot refuse or cancel coverage just because you serve in the U.S. military or reserves. They also cannot deny you or charge you more only because you traveled lawfully or plan to travel. Changes for travel are allowed only when based on sound actuarial principles and real risk. Insurers cannot use only the U.S. State Department travel warning list to set rates.
