Nursing homes must report serious injuries

The law requires nursing homes and other long-term care facilities to report serious resident injuries. They must notify the Illinois Department of Public Health’s regional office within 24 hours after any incident or accident that causes serious harm or makes a resident need immediate medical care, including hospital admission, as a direct result. Notice can be by phone, email, fax, or through the Office of Health Care Regulation LLCS Portal. The facility must send a narrative summary to the Department within 5 business days. This does not replace required reports of suspected abuse or neglect.
