Starting 2027, most plans cover Alzheimer’s care

For policies issued, renewed, or changed on or after January 1, 2027, health plans must cover Alzheimer’s care. Plans must cover needed diagnostic tests and FDA‑approved treatments to slow the disease, when a licensed doctor says they are necessary. Plans cannot require step therapy for these drugs. HMOs, limited health service plans, and voluntary health services plans must follow this rule; limited plans only cover services within their limited scope. Pharmacists may substitute allowed generics or interchangeable biologics under state law. This rule does not apply to managed care plans under contract with the Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

State worker plans cover Alzheimer’s care

From July 1, 2025 through July 1, 2027, the State Employees Group Insurance Program covers Alzheimer’s care. Plans cover needed diagnostic tests and FDA‑approved treatments to slow the disease when a licensed doctor says they are necessary. Plans cannot require step therapy for these drugs. This temporary coverage ends July 1, 2027.
