3-point belts on new school buses, with limits

Beginning July 1, 2031, every seat on any newly purchased school bus must have a 3‑point seat belt. The belt must work and meet federal standards. The rule does not cover buses a school district leases. It also does not cover a bus registered in another state with that state’s plates if the bus is not being used in Illinois for cultural, tourist, athletic, or similar trips for students who attend a school outside Illinois. The law does not require schools, drivers, aides, or volunteers to adjust, fasten, or teach how to use the belts.
