Hospitals must issue assault care vouchers

Beginning January 1, 2024, treatment hospitals and approved pediatric facilities must give you a sexual assault services voucher when you receive medical forensic care. Hospitals, clinicians, ambulances, labs, and pharmacies can bill the Illinois DHFS Sexual Assault Emergency Treatment Program using your name, birth date, service, date, and charge—no voucher copy needed. The Department checks electronically that a voucher was issued before paying and can issue one if it was missed. Hospitals must keep a plan that names staff who issue vouchers and who can use the MEDI system, with signed use-only statements.

Voucher covers care and rides home

The voucher pays for ambulance rides, medical forensic exams, lab tests, pharmacy costs, and follow-up care tied to the assault. These payments are available under state law starting January 1, 2024. Starting January 1, 2026, it can also pay for taxi or rideshare rides after care to your first hospital, your home, or a survivor shelter if available. A hospital may arrange a ride only with your written consent.
