Employers cannot fire, discipline, or punish you just because they got a written notice from an outside agency or vendor about an ID or ITIN mismatch. They must tell you and your representative as soon as possible, no later than 5 business days after getting the notice or deciding you must respond, unless a shorter federal or union timeline applies. They must hand you the notice if possible; if not, they must mail it and email it (if they have your email), and notify your representative. The notice must say who reported the mismatch, any federal deadline to contest it, and what action your employer asks you to take; on request, you or your representative get the original notice. You may bring a representative to any meeting about the notice. These rules apply to public and private employers in Illinois.
