Lower colorectal screening costs for Kentuckians

Beginning January 1, 2026, covered Kentucky health plans must cover complete colorectal cancer screening when issued or renewed. Coverage serves people without symptoms who are 45 or older, plus younger people at high risk. Covered exams, lab tests, and screening frequency follow the latest American Cancer Society guidelines for those 45 or older. For younger high-risk patients, they follow the latest U.S. Multi-Society Task Force guidelines. Coverage includes prescribed, FDA-approved bowel preparation. Participating-provider services require no prior approval, deductible, coinsurance, or other patient cost-sharing. An HSA-qualified high-deductible plan can retain cost-sharing until its federal minimum deductible is met, but only to preserve HSA eligibility. Existing coverage duties under other laws remain. For Medicaid, the cabinet can seek needed federal approval within 90 days of the act’s effective date. Implementation can wait until that approval arrives; state agencies must share requests with lawmakers and provide updates on request. Separately, pre-2026 screening benefits count as state requirements adopted before December 31, 2011, not added essential health benefits.
