Kentucky Medicaid and its contracted health plans cannot pay for cross-sex hormones used mainly or only to treat gender dysphoria. The hormone ban no longer depends on amounts the body normally produces. Medicaid also cannot pay for gender reassignment surgery that changes or removes physical features typical of a person's biological sex. Both bans have an exception when federal law requires payment.
Kentucky pharmacists may keep filling an existing prescription for up to 180 days after the prescriber's death. The pharmacist must know about the death and use professional judgment to decide that continuing is clinically appropriate. This permission applies despite conflicting state laws. Controlled-substance prescriptions remain subject to the federal Controlled Substances Act and federal drug enforcement rules. Continued fills are allowed, not guaranteed.
