The law requires a one-time $2,000 payment to eligible Louisiana Firefighters’ Retirement System retirees and nonretiree beneficiaries by August 1, 2025. Retirees qualify after receiving benefits for at least one year by June 30, 2025. Nonretiree beneficiaries qualify when their benefit period and the retiree’s total at least one year by that date. Payments cover at most 2,857 people and cost no more than $5.714 million. The Funding Deposit Account pays first; increased employer contributions cover any shortfall. The board can also use this account to fund future cost-of-living increases, but no increase is guaranteed. The board may set employer contribution rates above the minimum recommended rate, with all related surplus going into the account.
