Broader firefighter pay training, with limits

The law expands training options for Louisiana firefighters hired after March 31, 1986, seeking state supplemental pay. Qualifying programs must meet Pro Board accreditation or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress approval requirements, plus Louisiana Fire and Emergency Training Academy validation. Training must equal NFPA 1010 or 1001 Firefighter I certification. Covered port fire protection officers can also qualify through approved state or federally approved maritime firefighter training. Full-time officers at the Port of New Orleans, Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District, and Port of South Louisiana qualify after one year of service. Their extra pay is $600 monthly, on top of employer pay. The state pays it using the employing agency’s self-generated revenue. Workers hired mainly for clerical or similar duties, part-time workers, and volunteers are excluded. Prior service counts retroactively toward eligibility, including service with municipal, parish, tribal, or fire protection district departments. Returning employees who received state supplemental pay before March 31, 1986, remain eligible without completing or passing the certified training.
