Higher notary bonds and new filing rules

Beginning February 1, 2026, Louisiana notaries subject to bonding requirements, including ex officio notaries, need $50,000 bonds, up from $10,000. Errors-and-omissions insurance no longer replaces a bond, and bonds must be filed and kept with the secretary of state. Missing a renewal or filing deadline automatically suspends notarial work until the bond is active and filed, without invalidating the commission. Bonds backed by a personal surety or special mortgage must also be recorded in the parish mortgage office. Bonds signed by a surety company authorized in Louisiana no longer need clerk-of-court recording or approval.
