Lifetime survivor benefits for firefighters’ disabled children

The law provides lifetime payments from a deceased Firefighters’ Retirement System member’s survivor benefit to a designated child. The child must have a permanent mental or physical disability, and the surviving spouse’s designation cannot be changed. Previously, payments could end if the child’s disability was no longer determined to be permanent.

Firefighter spouses face deadline for children's benefits

The law sets a deadline for surviving spouses of Firefighters’ Retirement System members who assign survivor benefits to children. They must name the child within 30 days after the member’s death. Eligible children are the deceased member’s dependent minors or children with a permanent mental or physical disability. Assigning a share to a child means accepting a reduced benefit for the spouse.
