More check-in options for Maryland seniors

Beginning October 1, 2025, the renamed Senior Call-Check and Social Connections Program serves eligible Maryland residents age 60 and older. Participants must face a risk of social isolation and benefit from added social contact and wellness checks. Regular contact can include calls, texts, online messages, video, or in-person visits, and must be accessible to participants with disabilities. Depending on the Secretary of Aging's program design, missed responses may trigger follow-up and notification of a designated contact or local agency. The Department must coordinate with Telecommunications Access of Maryland, promote accessible communication equipment, and use that program's educational materials.

New partnerships and protections for senior-service providers

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland's Department of Aging can arrange program services through vendors, nonprofits, aging agencies, and other partners. Volunteer-led villages that help neighbors age at home must be incorporated in Maryland and serve older Maryland residents. The Department can make agreements with state or local agencies and accept public or private money, including gifts and grants. Accepted money must support program services; the law sets no funding amount. Listed providers, volunteers, and designated contacts receive liability protection for reasonable actions or failures directly tied to services following Department rules. Participating government units, workers, and agents are covered by the applicable state or local government claims law when following those rules.
