Maryland reviews how courts handle estates

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law creates a task force to study Maryland courts’ handling of estates and related matters. It reviews judges’ qualifications, training and selection, court responsibilities, case procedures, and practices in other states. It must seek expert guidance, allow public input, and recommend ways to improve court efficiency, consistency, and quality. Orphans’ courts, circuit courts, registers of wills, and the Administrative Office of the Courts must supply reasonably requested information needed for the study. Findings and recommendations are due to the Governor and General Assembly by January 1, 2026. Members receive no pay, but get expense reimbursement under state travel rules, as provided in the State budget. The law expires June 30, 2026.
