Homeowners gain protection from medical debt liens

For complaints filed on or after October 1, 2025, Maryland bans home liens based on contracts to pay covered medical debt, including broken contracts. The protection covers residential property where an owner uses at least one unit as their primary home. Courts must remove liens that violate this ban. Covered debt is owed to a business mainly providing medical services, products, or devices, or its agent or assignee. Credit-card debt is excluded unless the credit plan is offered solely to pay for health care.

Medical debt lawsuits require home addresses

Beginning October 1, 2025, new Maryland complaints seeking a money judgment must say whether the debt is medical debt. For medical debt, the person filing must include the defendant's primary-home address. These requirements do not apply to complaints filed before that date.
