Dental assistant reinstatement requires training and fees

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland provides a path to restore expired expanded function dental assistant certificates. Holders must complete board-required continuing education, submit a renewal application by the board's deadline, and pay its renewal fee. The dental board must establish continuing education rules that include hands-on clinical training and an online study option. Education must come from eligible certification education providers or state dental professional societies affiliated with national dental organizations. The law does not set the fee amount or continuing education hours.

More dental assistant courses, with training rules

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland expands course options for expanded function dental assistant certification. The dental board can approve Dale Foundation courses and Trapezio Orthodontic Assistant Training Solutions orthodontic courses, including successor providers. Other eligible programs include Job Corps, qualifying accredited college and high school programs, and programs accredited by the Council on Dental Accreditation. Courses must cover the mouth procedure for which certification is sought. Initial courses must include at least 35 total hours, combining online and in-person instruction. The board must set required hours for each format and hands-on clinical training. Applicants must be at least 18, have good moral character, and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. They must complete the approved course, hold appropriate Dental Assisting National Board certification, pass any board-required exam, and undergo a state criminal history check.
