Earlier pension rules for returning Maryland officers

Beginning July 1, 2025, qualifying former Maryland state police, correctional, and law enforcement pension members return under earlier pension rules. They face the same requirements as members who belonged on June 30, 2011, and remained on July 1, 2011. They must have belonged by June 30, 2011, left their contributions in the system, and not become retirees. They must return to a job covered by their former system. They also need one of three qualifying separations: a break of four years or less; enough service when leaving to qualify for a future vested pension; or military service protected by federal reemployment law, followed by reemployment within one year of leaving military service. The military route generally requires a job in the same system. However, the law enforcement pension system's military clause names a correctional-system job, while its final return requirement names a law-enforcement-system job.
