Speed cameras authorized on Route 200

The Maryland Transportation Authority can use speed cameras on Route 200 in Montgomery County. Cameras record vehicles going at least 12 mph over the speed limit, with civil fines capped at $40. Before activation, the Authority must publish camera locations and install required signs, including signs showing drivers’ real-time speeds. Cameras require yearly independent calibration, and the program must follow administrator training, citation review, contractor, and annual reporting rules. The District Court sends fines collected from Authority-controlled cameras to the Authority. Beginning October 1, 2025, the State Highway Administration must share access to its existing speed cameras and vendor contacts to help set up the program.
