No anesthesia time limits for Maryland patients

Beginning January 1, 2026, new anesthesia protections apply to Maryland Medicaid, including managed care plans, and qualifying private health plans. When they cover anesthesia for a procedure ordered by a licensed medical professional, they must cover the procedure’s entire duration. They must also cover medical care related to anesthesia immediately before and after the procedure. They cannot set or enforce time limits on anesthesia delivery. For insurance policies, contracts, and health benefit plans, these rules apply when issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2026.
