Maryland auto fund faces stronger financial oversight

The Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund must calculate and report its risk-based capital, a measure of its financial strength. Beginning December 31, 2026, its total adjusted capital must meet or exceed its required company action level. State rate-review rules apply to its premium decisions and rate filings from July 1 through December 31, 2025. Beginning January 1, 2026, those rules apply when its reported capital falls below the required amount. These changes do not set premiums or guarantee savings for policyholders.

Maryland auto insurers face special assessment rules

For the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund’s 2025 operating results only, its board has special authority to certify an insurer assessment. It may certify the greater of the statutory calculation or a board-selected amount up to $20 million. The certification deadline is March 15, 2026. The assessment applies to insurers subject to it, not directly to households.
