Maryland drivers keep access to vintage plates

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration must keep offering vintage reproduction plates, ending the one-year sales limit. The plates must resemble Maryland’s 1910 design, with black letters on a yellow background. Eligible vehicles are Class A passenger vehicles, Class L historic vehicles, Class M multipurpose vehicles, and Class N street rods. Class E trucks also qualify if the manufacturer’s rated capacity is 1 ton or less. Owners can apply, as can lessees whose leases do not serve as loan security. Directors, officers, employees, and partners of businesses that own eligible vehicles can also apply.

Maryland vintage plate owners pay extra fees

Beginning October 1, 2025, owners pay $100 when a vintage reproduction plate is first issued. They also pay $25 each time it is renewed. These charges are added to the regular annual registration fee. The fees cover Motor Vehicle Administration costs and are credited to the Gasoline and Motor Vehicle Revenue Account for distribution under state law.
