Sheriff’s office employees gain protection from lawsuits

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland county and Baltimore City sheriff’s office employees get the same legal protections as sheriffs and deputies. These protections cover lawsuits in Maryland state courts and liability for harm caused while performing public duties. Employees must act without malice or gross negligence. The State or its units must have waived immunity for the act under the Maryland Tort Claims Act. Employee protection applies even when damages exceed that waiver’s limits, limiting injured people’s ability to recover from these employees.
